New disc golf course opens at Firehouse Park in the Town of Sheboygan.

The soaring popularity of disc golf has spawned a new expansive course in Sheboygan County.

The nine-hole course is now open at Firehouse Park, thanks to the Town of Sheboygan Lions Club. Originally planned in 2013, the project got off the ground late last year when the Lions Club took over funding and planning of the course, which spans the entire park.

“The thought was ‘we’ve done a lot for little kids, but what about young adults or adults?’” Town of Sheboygan Lion Bob Oonk said.

The Lions Club brought in Dennis Wield to design the park — a name well known to area disc golf enthusiasts. Wield, along with his wife Patti, run The Shack at Vollrath Park, a disc golf pro shop on what is touted as Wisconsin’s oldest 18-hole course.
