Small Machine Shop Invests Millions in Equipment
Sheboygan’s Z&N Machine Co., Inc. Provides Technical Edge to Customers
Sheboygan, WI – Z&N Machine Co., Inc. invested $1.5 Million in equipment and is now home to the largest CNC Boring Bar on the Lakeshore. Five semi-trucks are needed to transfer the piece of equipment from its manufacturer to Wisconsin. Owner of Z&N Machine Co., Inc., Earl Ney, jokes that the single piece of equipment cost more than his facility.
The machine will be put to immediate use of machining of parts for numerous customers. Ney believes additional size will help the local area, and bring more work to the area.
Founded in 1996 by Ney, the company specializes in fabricating, repairing and rebuilding custom high-speed manufacturing machines, and machining of parts for other companies.
“We are always looking for better ways to make machines and parts so they last longer and work better at a lower price”.
It is rare for smaller companies to invest so much in equipment; however, Ney believes it is worth the investment as not just for now but for future projects.
According to the Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development Payroll Employment Estimates (CES) Sheboygan County employment in manufacturing has increased by 7% over the last 5 years to 21,300 employees from February 2014 to 2019. Fabricated Metal Product Manufacturing has outperformed manufacturing average by growing twice as fast or 14.2% to 8,400 employees.
Ney states there is a tremendous opportunity for young people to grow in this field. “We have the best group of employees we could ask for. But the challenge to our industry is finding good workers that put pride and quality in their work.” Ney stated that Z&N will overcome these challenges by, “adding these type of people as he finds them.”
Z&N’s new boring bar can travel 236” x 98” x 63” with a rotary table. It is powered with a 55 HP motor and runs a 5.9” spindle. This machine will complement Z&N’s impressive assortment of mills and lathes needed to run a custom machine shop capable of building and repairing top of the line custom manufacturing equipment.
